If you’re someone with naturally oily skin, then you’re well aware of the ongoing battle between skin that’s moisturized and skin that’s greasy. When the hot and humid weather arrives, even those with skin on the dry side can experience a bit of a struggle. There’s a big difference between a little bit of shine on the skin and a downright oil slick. What can we do to combat the greasy glow in pursuit of a healthy glow? Here are a few tips to help avoid the oily takeover and keep skin moisturized without getting greasy.
If you’re someone who suffers from oily skin, then you’re in tune with your T-zone. This is the area of the face that includes your forehead, nose, chin and inner cheeks. This area contains the most oil glands on your face so if you tend to have oily skin, here is where you will notice the excess build-up. People who suffer from oily skin tend to have pores that are more visible, and they suffer from more breakouts than someone with dry skin. The good news is that those with oily skin tend to look a bit younger. Oil on the skin is a good thing, and it does keep our skin looking more healthy and youthful. It’s only when you have too much oil that it starts to be a problem. But, no worry. There are a few things you can do to stay moisturized without getting greasy.

Choose the Right Cleanser for Oily Skin
The first step to any healthy skin care regimen starts with cleansing. Choose a cleanser that is formulated for oily skin. If your cleanser is designed to slow the production of sebum as well as remove excess oil from the surface, then you’re using the right product. Be sure to cleanse your skin using warm water twice a day—in the morning when you wake up and before going to bed. I love cleansers with jojoba beads to help smooth and polish, and anything with citrus makes me think of clean skin. It also makes me think of clean dishes but, hey, that’s another story. Look for natural ingredients like Aloe vera to provide nice, lightweight moisture as well.
Opt for a Serum
I’ve talked to so many people who tell me they just can’t bear to apply a heavy moisturizer to their skin, especially during the warmer seasons. No problem. Serums are a great way to go. They’re lighter in weight than most lotions and creams and deliver moisture deeper into the outer layers of the skin. They’re the perfect solution to help avoid the greasy takeover.
Apply a Primer
Some people love primer, and some think it’s a waste of time. You can decide it they’re right for you by giving one a try. Opt for a matting primer that helps reduce the appearance of shine. It’ll help your makeup go on smoother and should keep that excess oil at bay. Primers these days have some amazing ingredients that go beyond just aiding in makeup application. And look for one with antioxidant vitamins. We can use all the help we can get against free radicals in the environment.
Sunscreen Is Still a Must
No matter what, you can’t avoid sunscreen. While in the past it seemed like it was the number one enemy against oily skin, this is no longer the case. Sunscreen products have come a long way and now have improved dry-down times. Many are less oily, more matte and don’t leave that greasy, shiny after-feel. In fact, some have a nice, light powdery after-feel that works great on oily skin. For the sake of healthy, youthful skin, sunscreen is incredibly important. So, find the one that works best for you. And if it has the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation, then even better yet.
Don’t Over Apply
Everyone struggles with determining the right amount of product to apply. Most of us can get away with about a dime size of product for our face when it comes to our serums and day and night creams. Too much product can really add to that oily shine.
Here’s a quick tip to ensure you get the right amount of product and don’t over do it. Apply five small dots of product to your forehead, nose, chin and cheeks. Then simply blend upwards and outwards. Upwards to go against gravity, and outwards all the way to your hairline. Let it dry. If after this step you feel an area needs a bit more product, then apply more only to that area. I use one pump of product and apply it this way every day. For some reason I always need a bit more moisturizer on the left side of my forehead. I’m convinced this is the area of my face that’s most exposed to the sun when I’m driving, and therefore has suffered over the years.
Give Yourself a Clay Mask
Masking can be greatly beneficial when it comes to combating oily skin. It’s not something that you need to do every day, but once a week or so can provide wonderful benefits to the skin. Bentonite clay is my favorite type of clay, because it is known for its absorbing and toning properties. A bentonite clay mask will remove oil, dirt and dead skin. This helps to prevent pore clogging, which ultimately leads to breakouts. A good clay mask should help diminish the appearance of pore size as well.
