Get Clean Skin by Breaking These Bad Habits
Who isn’t in pursuit of clean, healthy looking skin? I know I am! We all strive for skin that is soft, smooth and glowing. Are we doing everything we can to keep our skin looking and feeling its absolute best? Are we taking every precautionary measure possible to age well?
There is nothing like a big, red pimple to ruin your day. Sometimes it’s the little things in life that can make the biggest impact. And, when it comes to our skin, this is definitely the case. There are many little changes we can all make on our quest for clean, more youthful looking skin. And all we have to do is turn our bad habits into good ones.
Here are a few habits we all need to break immediately in the pursuit of clean, healthy looking skin:

Don’t Touch
No matter how difficult it may seem we need to keep our hands away from our face. Every time we touch our skin, chances are we are transmitting something that isn’t all that great. The dirt and oils from our hands can easily be deposited onto our skin if we aren’t careful. So a hand’s off approach is always best. This rule also applies to pimples. No matter what you must resist the urge to pop or pick at your pimples. We can transmit bacteria this way, which could lead to infection. It’s a vicious cycle. So break the habit of touching and picking at your skin immediately.
Change Your Pillowcases
Every one has their own personal schedule when it comes to laundering their sheets and pillowcases. It’s definitely not my favorite household chore. When it comes to keeping your skin clean, however, changing your pillowcase as frequently as possible is important. When we sleep at night our hair and skin are all over our pillowcase. Hair oils and product are rubbed onto the pillowcase and they ultimately end up on your face, shoulders or even back. If you aren’t diligent about removing your makeup every night, that’s a cause for concern, too. Keep those pillowcases clean if your skin isn’t as clean as you would like it to be. If laundering is not always an option, turn your pillowcase inside out or flip your pillow over to help keep impurities from collecting on your skin.
Clean Your Phones
There’s hardly a day that goes by when someone doesn’t ask me why they are getting blemishes down one side of their cheek. Assuming that there is no other skin condition, this might be a quick fix, actually. Clean your telephones! Whether it’s a mobile or a landline, if the phone is touching your skin it is depositing something onto your face and taking away other things that will remain on your phone until cleaned. Yuck! Clean your phones and screens regularly and turn this into a daily habit. I love to use spray hand sanitizers or antibacterial wipes because they will clean the phone and kill germs in the process. When all else fails, try to use your speakerphone or headphones to avoid contact.
Pull Back Your Hair
One habit that needs to be broken applies to men and women with longer hair. Our hair is loaded with all kinds of debris, oils, product, scents, you name it. It’s like flypaper and it tends to catch everything it comes into contact with. These germs and impurities reside in your hair and unfortunately get transferred onto the face, shoulders and back every time they come into contact with each other. Break this habit and start pulling your hair back when you sleep, when you are at the gym or even if you are just lounging around on the couch reading a book. If you can keep your hair away from your skin you will begin to see an improvement in the appearance of your skin.
Remove that Makeup
We all know that removing our makeup is not merely an option. It must be done every single night before we go to bed. So if you have gotten into the habit of neglecting this important beauty tip, then break it right away. There is absolutely nothing good that can come out of sleeping with makeup on your face. But it’s not just about sleeping. If you are working out you need to cleanse your face pre- and post-workout in the name of clear skin. Makeup will mix with your sweat and oils during your workout and can unfortunately lead to clogged pores. So be sure to cleanse pre- and post-workout and keep facial cleansing cloths on hand to make it a simple habit to incorporate.
No More Alcohol
If you are using skin care products that contain alcohol, break this habit, too. Skin care products containing alcohol tend to dry out the skin. If you are already prone to dryness, the result could lead to skin that looks dry, flakey and even chapped. No one wants this. Dry skin tends to look a bit older then skin that is on the oily side or that is properly moisturized. So drop the alcohol-infused products and look for alcohol-free products right away.
Do Hair Before Applying Makeup
This was the hardest habit I personally have had to break. I have always applied my makeup first and then went on to tackle the hair. Little did I know I wasn’t doing my skin any favors. If you apply your makeup and then reach for the blow dryer, the heat from the dryer can cause your makeup to melt and transfer. Unfortunately, this can cause makeup to settle into your pores, which could ultimately lead to breakouts. Try switching it up. Admittedly it was a hard habit for me to break, but now I get it!
Pay Attention to Your Glasses
I have glasses for reading and I have glasses to protect my eyes from the sun (or perhaps they are more for a fashion statement). Either way, if you notice breakouts on your nose, temples or upper cheeks, your glasses could be the culprit. Not unlike your phone, you need to practice the healthy habit of cleaning your eyeglasses and sunglasses regularly. Wipe down the glass, the arms and the nosepiece every day to ensure you are removing germs, makeup, oils and debris. Clean your glasses and sunglasses with rubbing alcohol or spray hand sanitizer and wipe them down with a soft cloth. This one little habit could be the difference between dirty and clean skin. Give it a try.
Don’t Neglect the Body
If you only wash and moisturize your face, you are doing yourself a huge disservice. Breakouts can definitely occur on other areas of the body – think Bacne and shoulder acne. So to keep your skin clean, be sure to wash from head to toe and use a moisturizer. Post workout, try to get your sweaty clothes changed to clean clothes immediately. And always pat your skin dry with a clean towel. Never reach for the family hand towel.
